Akcja „The Expanse” rozgrywa się 200 lat w przyszłości, a w jej centrum leży sprawa zaginionej kobiety. Bohaterami są Jim Holden, zastępca dowódcy statku Canterbury, który zajmuje się holowaniem brył lodu z Pierścieni Saturna do zajmujących się górnictwem i wydobyciem minerałów Stacji Pasa Asteroid, oraz detektyw Miller, który poszukuje zaginionej. Kiedy wiedziony tropem trafia do Scopuli i sympatyzującego z buntownikami Holdena, zaczyna zdawać sobie sprawę, że dziewczyna może być kluczem do wszystkiego. Układowi Słonecznemu grozi wojna.
